Unabashedly Conservative: How to Talk About Politics With Your Family This Holiday Season

Updated: Oct 9, 2020

By: Emily Long

As Thanksgiving and the holiday season approaches, most of us will gather with family and friends to celebrate.

However, as soon as Grandpa says MAGA and your woke Auntie says “#MeToo,” the political discussion erupts. Politics often come up during the holidays since it is a hot topic that everyone has opinions on. These discussions can quickly take a turn for the worse and end with everyone awkwardly eating their pie in silence.

So, here’s how to peacefully talk about politics this season with your family:

1. Don’t

2. Don’t

3. Don’t

4. Don’t

5. Don’t

Is that a list with 5 don'ts? Yes. You might have thought that I would have a nuanced way to help you educate your relatives on the current political climate. But alas, I think that the best solution is to avoid the topic altogether. Although I like talking about politics, I realize that there is a time and a place where it is appropriate and holiday celebrations are not one of them. We argue enough in our daily lives about politics, give it a rest. You only have one family, so put aside your partisanship for a day and actually connect with your relatives.

Here are five alternative ways you can educate your relatives, instead of discussing politics:

1. What exactly Tik Tok is

2. How to Snapchat

3. Who Lizzo is and why she is 100% that….

4. How to properly pronounce “VSCO”

5. How to reset their Netflix password without texting you first

This holiday season, let’s stick to talking about why you’re still single and don’t have a clue of what to do after graduation. Pass the pie please!
