Lasell University draws in students locally and nationally to provide an enhanced and professionalized education. Most people believe small schools do not have much to offer, which made me begin to think, what drew students in to apply and eventually choose to go here? My goal was to find out students' appeal to the school, and what they wish to change about Lasell. I wanted fellow Lasers to have the chance to voice their opinion and give constructive feedback that the school would hopefully listen to.
Lasell has many different choices for majors and its proximity to Boston is a very big appeal to students choosing a college. It is just one easy hop onto the Green Line and you are in the city in no time. Lasell is in such a unique place: a major suburbia but then you drive nine miles east and you are in the heart of the city. There is also a major focus on affordability here at Lasell. I think students here have the best of both worlds because we are residing in such a nice area, which is very, very expensive, but we do not pay nearly as much as a student at Bentley or Boston University. Students can have that experience of living here in Newton and commuting into the city, without having to pay nearly as much as people going to other schools in this area, or people living in this area in general. I asked my interviewees eight questions about Lasell:
What made you choose to go to Lasell?
Favorite thing about Lasell?
Best memory made at Lasell?
How are you involved here on campus?
What is one thing you wish you could change about Lasell?
Why?
What did you like most about Lasell that you think other colleges may not offer?
How do you think attending Lasell will help you in your future career?
What makes students at Lasell different?
As I interviewed many students, I came to several conclusions about Lasell; many students enjoy and highlight the proximity to Boston, which offers many things for students to do. Students also appreciate the connections they make with their professors. Students can be three sport athletes here, but Lasell emphasizes that you are a student before you are an athlete. Having classroom sizes of 20-30 students really helps people connect with each other and professors on a more personal level. The interviewees said that having small classroom sizes is a great feature about Lasell. As they walk around campus, they always see faces they know and feel a sense of community, rather than being just a number here on campus. Students find professors really understanding if they miss a class due to a sports game or an emergency.
Being in clubs is another way students get to meet people and make connections with other peers whom they normally wouldn’t have met by just being on campus with them. Lasell offers around seventy-two clubs and makes it very easy for people to start one. Most people say there are clubs for every interest, which brings together people who share the same love for certain topics or activities. For a small school, I believe Lasell offers a lot; just sometimes you have to go find it yourself. There are many opportunities to grow your professional career, and meet different kinds of people. To quote Jalynn Hilton, “I think the beauty about Lasell is that everyone is different in their own unique ways. No one looks the same, no one dresses the same, no one talks the same, and everyone is individualized.” And I do agree that Lasell supports and emphasizes uniqueness among all students. At Lasell, there is always a place for you to share your individualism, which is why students feel at home here.
