Ice Cream Bar: A Big Hit at Lasell Dining
It is interesting to hear the reasons as to why students choose Lasell. My second interviewee, Franklin Torres, is currently a junior studying Exercise Science. He is very involved on campus; he works in the Dining Hall, 1851, and the library; he competes in the 400-meter race and the discus for the track team; he is part of the E-sport, Outdoor Adventure, and Health Science clubs. When he was touring Lasell, the fifth year program for the Health Science majors enticed him. This means he could graduate with a master's degree in five years at Lasell, instead of doing an extra two years after receiving his bachelor's degree. Not to mention, Franklin is also a fan of the self-scoop ice cream bar located in the dining hall. As the interview continued, I asked Franklin to reflect on his past two years here at Lasell, and try to narrow down one of the best memories he made at Lasell. Franklin responded to my question by stating that his favorite memory was the Halloween indoor track practice this year. Franklin and the team decided to dress up; Franklin was Wandisimo from Fairly Odd Parents, and their coach dressed up as a crayon. In their costumes, the team had mini competitions they needed to complete in order to win. This was one of Franklin's best memories because he enjoyed dressing up for Halloween, and overall everyone had a good time and enjoyed themself at this track practice.
After conducting all of my interviews, it is safe to say that the general consensus about what students like most here at Lasell is the small classroom size, which allows students to connect with professors on a deeper, more personal level. When I asked what Franklin likes best about Lasell, he said the professors really make the school enjoyable. He loves the professors in the Exercise Science Program, and their knowledge and love for the subject has deepened Franklin's interest and love to learn about Exercise Science. He believes this 5 in 1 program really sets Lasell apart from other Universities. Students really love this because they save money and time from another year of schooling. When asked “How do you think attending Lasell will help you in your future career?” Franklin responded, “Lasell has shown it's really important to make connections with people in your field and make good relationships with professors.” Taking the step to advance his connections with people Lasell brings in for presentations or internships early on will help him advance in the professional world.
Lasell has so much to offer students, but there are some setbacks to the school. When I asked Franklin what he wishes to change about Lasell, he stated that he would like to change the culture of the school. He believes the school is very cliquey, and the people are very judgmental; everyone would benefit from spreading kindness or saying hi to a stranger. Lastly, Franklin believes the money that goes to the Athletics Department should be evenly distributed among the sports teams, and the Athletics Department should really look into fixing Taylor Field. Franklin added great constructive criticism that can help Lasell, and he clearly enjoys his time here.
