Alone Together, But Not Bored: Roller Skates and "Aha" Moments

by Kelly Mooney

Today I spoke with Kayla Somsanouk, whom I met at Lasell. Kayla lives with her family in Connecticut and is studying remotely. Like last week, we discussed life in quarantine with her family.

KM: Including yourself, did anyone come back home because of corona?

KS: No, but because we’ve all been at home. My mom was off work for a bit.

KM: Who lives in your home with you then?

KS: My brother, my sister, my nephews, my mom, and my dad.

KM: What was your favorite activity during quarantine?

KS: I really liked spending time with my mom since she didn’t have to work. I also did some collaging; I never do that.

KM: I’ve done that before; it’s fun.

KS: Yeah, it’s peaceful.

KM: Were you still able to work?

KS: I did work; it was not fun.

KM: Where are you working?

KS: I work at a coffee shop.

KM: Did you take any corona safe vacations or staycations?

KS: No, I didn’t.

KM: Did you rediscover anything you once loved? For example, an old Disney show binge...

KS: You know what, I did. I re-watched Lizzie McGuire.

KM: I did too, that’s funny! I loved that show when I was younger, so I re-watched that one too.

KM: What activity, or anything in general, got old quickly?

KS: Cooking was overdone, like trying new things all the time. I was reading a lot but I got kind of tired of it. I found myself doing the same things over again. I went through way too many books. Online shopping... that one was pretty big too.

KM: The things you wish you had time for, that’s what gets old fast.

KS: Ok so, the things you never had time for before, you have time for now but now you realize this is why you don’t “incorporate” it all.

KM: What do you wish you got to do with all the free time at home?

KS: I bought a pair of roller skates and haven't gotten around to using them. I wish I took more time to pick up a new hobby, like roller skating, but something cool. I feel like people were finding themselves and having that “woosah,” or “aha” moment, but I was just sitting at home eating, cooking, and collaging.

KM: I like the roller skating idea. They got popular during quarantine.

KM: What did you learn about yourself and your family?

KS: I learned that we actually can’t be around each other that much. It was kind of a nightmare. We found little things to argue about, but we actually had time to do activities together. It was good and bad.

KM: Good spending time in moderation. Any fun activities or recipes that you would like to share?

KS: I made strawberry bread.

KM: Sounds good.

KS: It was so cute!

In this interview, Kayla and I had a small “woosah” moment. We noticed that the activities we had the extra time for are the ones we got tired of the quickest. Moving forward, we can arrange time for the activities we enjoy the most. Collaging, cooking, and eating may not be life changing, but we got the relaxation we needed. Kayla learned that in her full house, a little solitude could benefit her when the family had spent too much time together. Good luck on those skates, Kayla!
