Alone Together, But Not Bored: Golf Courses vs. Home

by Kelly Mooney

I spoke with Tirzah McGowan this week. She will be graduating next semester with a degree in Criminal Justice.

KM: Did anyone in your family come back home for the coronavirus and quarantine?

TM: My brother did because he is a commercial truck driver and drives all over the country. He came back home and quarantined with us for a couple of months.

KM: Who lives in your home with you?

TM: Me, my brother, my grandmother, and my mom.

KM: What was your favorite activity during quarantine?

TM: The golf course a couple of towns over was closed so I would go there and just walk around forever because there are so many pathways. It was a good way to get away. That was something I enjoyed doing.

KM: Was it pretty at the course?

TM: Oh my gosh, yes. There are walkways over water and little gazebos. I really liked it; I was bummed when they opened it up again.

KM: It is nice that you were able to walk there though.

Were you able to work?

TM: I ended up getting a job with DoorDash a few months in, so I was able to work. But my mom was an essential worker at CVS so she never left work; she was working the whole time.

KM: Did you take any corona-safe vacations?

TM: I went to North Conway. Me and four friends who had been quarantining for a while got an Airbnb in July.

KM: How was it different from other trips?

TM: We had to plan around not being close to people which was weird. We went to the lake and there were two other families. We all just stayed in our separate areas of the beach; it was strange. I would have liked to go to a festival because that is what I like to do during the summer. A lot more planning went into it mostly.

KM: Did you rediscover anything you once loved? Like binging an old Disney show.

TM: Oh, Disney+ oh my god. I was watching Ice Princess and other movies from 2004. It was so weird watching them again just because I have not watched them since I was a kid. I did that a lot in the beginning because I was not leaving my house for a couple of months.

KM: I did the Disney Show thing too.

TM: Oh, the Even Stevens; all of them were so fun!

KM: What got old quickly?

TM: I would say being at home in general. I felt like it was just this constant reminder that the world is just sad. I mean, being at home makes you think a lot more compared to going out with friends, which helps you take your mind off things. Being at home got old fast and that’s when I started going to the golf course.

KM: That makes sense. What do you wish you got to do with all the free time at home? TM: I wish I read more. I started reading books in June; I’m not a big reader. I wish I forced myself to read more. A lot of people were finding cool books and rereading old ones.

KM: What did you learn?

TM: I learned that celebrities and influencers suck a lot more than we realized. I feel like the whole pandemic has exposed the different playing field that we are all on because working class people have a lot to lose whereas celebrities were like, “stay inside, I'm playing in my indoor bowling alley.” Of course, quarantine got old for them quickly so they stopped caring.

KM: I noticed that too.

Any fun activities or recipes that you learned or would like to share?

TM: I tried that whipped coffee that was a trend on TikTok and I was making it like a million times a day for a while. Then, I started making coffee ice cubes, which really fueled my addiction.

Tirzah and I discussed the struggles of being locked away for so long. We got bored quickly and it was difficult to watch celebrities dealing with a different privilege than most of the country in this time. Tirzah still had some excitement, though. Like Kayla last week, she also revisited some old Disney shows. Thanks to Disney+, these shows can help us get out of our heads for a little bit. Our quarantine is what we make it: North Conway, golf course trails, and whipped coffee.
