Alone Together, But Not Bored: Creativity in NYC

by Kelly Mooney

This week I spoke with my friend Jordan Yates from home. He currently lives in New York City. Jordan is in an Associate’s program for Video Arts and Technology and works for a plant-based CBD skincare company. He also has recently moved in with his friend, Kenna.

KM: Who lived in your home with you during quarantine?

JY: I lived with my brother and his friend in Astoria.

KM: What was your favorite activity during quarantine?

JY: Besides drinking like every day... I met my friend at the track to work out. I do not work out at all, but we spent time together and then got coffee. I wasn’t working and school was just ending, so I had a lot of free time to just hang out.

KM: Were your roommate or brother able to work?

JY: They were all working from home and I had to file for unemployment. When I finally got it, I was making more than I was making when I was working.

KM: It was like that for my sister, too. Did you make any corona safe vacations?

JY: I went home to New Hampshire for my birthday. I went home for like a weekend in May. I did not get tested because they were not doing tests often then. I was quarantining for two weeks and didn’t have any symptoms so I figured it would be fine, and it ended up being okay.

KM: Did you rediscover anything you once loved doing?

JY: I restarted Gossip Girl, it’s my third time watching it. And I started working out more.

KM: What got old quickly?

JY: Ha, drinking... Although I wasn’t eating bad, just sitting at home, eating, and hanging out got very draining. I felt gross doing the same thing every day. Sitting in bed, looking at my phone and watching TV was draining and I felt nasty.

KM: I felt like that. That is understandable. What do you wish you got to with all the free time you had?

JY: I wish I did more freelance work. There is a lot of stuff I could have been doing for school or building my portfolio and now that I have started with school and work, I am totally overwhelmed. I should have taken advantage of the free time to be creative.

KM: What did you learn about yourself?

JY: I learned that I should not live with my brother. I also learned to be more responsible with my own health. Drinking water, eating right, and taking illness seriously. I was scared of the pandemic because no one knew what it was, and no one knew the procedure for quarantining. Over the summer everyone started going out again, now cases are coming back up and we need to take it seriously again.

KM: Were there any fun activities or recipes that you would like to share? Anything you tried over quarantine?

JY: No recipes. I did put out a song. I had a lot of time to play with music, though.

Jordan spent his quarantine with his brother and friend. While cooped up in an apartment in NYC, they had time to relax and do what they wanted for a bit. Although the fear of the pandemic is in the back of everyone’s mind, he did not let it stop him. Jordan also did not let the pandemic stop his creativity. Although he wishes he spent more time creating a portfolio, he was able to spend time making music.
