Honors Abroad: The Experience

Studying abroad is truly a life changing experience, as it helps you grow as a person. For the most part, you are all on your own - navigating through foreign territory as well as fending for yourself. You will develop more independence and other life skills that will help better prepare you more for the future. Not only does studying abroad help strengthen your personal characteristics, but it also allows you to establish connections from all around the world. When traveling around you will meet so many new people, so it is important to do your best in making lasting impressions on others. I was lucky enough to make new friends from numerous countries, such as Greece, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Saudi Arabia and more.

I have had the privilege of traveling outside of the United States a few times. However, I never have been able to stay longer than a week or two and it is usually with my family. It can definitely be a challenge being away from family, friends and home for a whole semester but you learn to adapt. Traveling the world opens your eyes to new things.

While abroad, one of my roommates, Trevor LaChance, was the perfect example of how traveling broadened his horizons. After a semester overseas, Trevor now has more interests in global topics such as current events or staying up to date with things rather than just focusing on the United States. Trevor explained how before going abroad, he did not really have too much of an interest in global concerns or other events happening. Trevor now stays in the loop and focuses more on foreign affairs due to his abroad experience. This is one of the many ways that studying abroad can help to mature you as person.
